Xi'an to Almaty flight path: XIY to ALA

Sit on the Left side of the plane for the best views on flights from Xi'an to Almaty. While the takeoff offers good Qinling views, the landing approach into Almaty provides more dramatic and sustained scenery—the snow-capped Trans-Ili Alatau mountains are visually striking and visible for a longer portion of the descent. Left-side seats capture this better.

During takeoff from Xianyang (XIY), sit on the Right side for the best views. Right-side seats offer views of the Qinling Mountains immediately south of Xi'an as the aircraft climbs westward. The range rises prominently above the Guanzhong Plain and remains visible for the first 15–20 minutes of flight. Notable sights include: Qinling Mountains (south), Guanzhong Plain (north and beneath), Wei River valley (north), Xi'an urban sprawl (directly below during initial climb).

When landing at Almaty (ALA), sit on the Left side for the best views. Left-side seats provide views of the Ile-Alatau National Park and the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains during descent into Almaty. These snow-capped peaks dominate the southern approach and are visible from 25,000 feet down to landing. Notable sights include: Trans-Ili Alatau mountains (south, snow-capped), Ile-Alatau National Park (south), Almaty city and urban sprawl (north), Turgen River valley (east).

The flight from Xianyang (XIY) to Almaty (ALA) takes about 3 hours 40 minutes. The shortest flight path between them is 1,800 miles (2,897 km); winds and air traffic control usually add a few percent.

The flight path crosses the Tianshan Mountains (visible around the 1h 30m mark), the Junggar Basin with its sparse desert landscape, and the Betpak-Dala steppe.
