Almaty's runway 05/23 means arrivals typically come in from the northwest on runway 05, with the aircraft approaching from the steppe. The left side faces south toward the Zailiysky Alatau range of the Tian Shan, which forms a dramatic snow-capped wall directly behind the city. This is the defining visual of any Almaty approach. Notable sights include: Zailiysky Alatau mountains (Tian Shan front range) rising directly south of the city, Almaty urban grid spreading across the foothills, Kapchagay Reservoir visible to the northeast on descent, flat Kazakh steppe stretching north.
